Why one minute is the standard length

Words per minute is, literally, a per-minute measurement — so a sixty-second run is the only length that hands you the answer without arithmetic. Shorter tests have to extrapolate, and extrapolation flatters you: a fifteen-second sprint multiplied by four assumes you could hold a burst pace for four times as long, which almost nobody can. A minute is long enough that your real rhythm shows up and long enough for a couple of mistakes to cost you something, which is exactly why it became the default on job screens, typing courses, and every leaderboard worth comparing against.

Expect your one-minute score to sit a little below your fifteen-second score and a little above your five-minute score. That ordering is normal and it is informative: the gap between your burst speed and your sustained speed is a measure of how much of your typing is momentum and how much is habit. If the two are close together, your technique is even. If your burst is far ahead, you are probably reading ahead well but losing accuracy as soon as concentration slips.
